Steve is a geological engineer with a 25-year background in oil and gas exploration, production and consulting. He also has performed research both within the oil and gas industry and with the Department of Defense. His particular areas of expertise involve reservoir characterization, CO2 flood performance and CO2 geologic sequestration. He has run a small, independent oil and gas company (Melzer Exploration) wherein he drilled over 30 wells in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. He has served as the Director for the Petroleum Industry Alliance, a research organization which is a part of the University of Texas System, and currently advises the State of Texas on the Advisory Board for the FutureGen Project for Texas. He has been the managing director for the annual CO2 Flooding Conference held each December in Midland, Texas for its thirteen years of service to the worldwide CO2 flooding industry. He is also currently president of the Applied Petroleum Technology Academy (http://www.aptapb.org/ ), a non-profit organization dedicated to training and transferring technology specifically related to recovering more oil from mature oil fields. In 1997 he formed Melzer Consulting to advise companies of the multi-faceted business issues of CO2 He often assists customers to gain an understanding of the complex CO2 marketplace. He has authored many papers and articles; the most recent papers deal with the exciting opportunities many fields have in vertical expansion of waterflooded intervals to include residual oil zones below the oil/water contact for the coming age of CO2 flooding. His list of clients include many major and large independent oil companies, the U.S. Department of Energy and Defense, The University of Texas, and several CO2 flooding. capture and transportation companies. |
